Founded
Real Madrid was founded on March 6, 1902, by a group of university students, led by Adolfo Meléndez. Initially, the club was named Madrid Football Club, but it was later changed to Real Madrid in 1920 after King Alfonso XIII granted the title "Real" (meaning "Royal" in Spanish) to the club.
Early Years
In the early years of its history, Real Madrid was not as successful as it is today. The club struggled to make a mark in Spanish football, often overshadowed by rival clubs such as FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. It was not until the 1950s that Real Madrid began to establish itself as a dominant force in Spanish and European football.
The Golden Age
The 1950s were the golden age of Real Madrid. During this decade, the club won five consecutive European Cups (now known as the UEFA Champions League), an unprecedented feat that has yet to be matched by any other club. Real Madrid's success during this period was largely due to the presence of legendary players such as Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, and Francisco Gento.
Real Madrid Legend
Real Madrid continued to dominate Spanish and European football in the following decades, winning numerous domestic and international titles. The 1960s saw the emergence of another Real Madrid legend, Santillana, who went on to score over 300 goals for the club. In the 1970s, Real Madrid won another three European Cups, and in the 1980s, the club won five consecutive La Liga titles.
